Abigail Spanberger repeatedly stated that gerrymandering was detrimental to democracy. In a 2019 tweet, she said, “Gerrymandering is detrimental to our democracy, and it weakens the individual voices that form our electorates. Opposing gerrymandering should be a bipartisan priority.” This statement was made in response to a Supreme Court ruling on racial gerrymandering in Virginia.
During her 2025 gubernatorial campaign, she reaffirmed this stance, explicitly stating: “Short answer is no. I have no plans to redistrict Virginia.” Her past opposition has drawn significant criticism in 2026, as she now supports a Democratic-led redistricting referendum that would shift Virginia’s congressional map from a 6-5 Democratic advantage to a proposed 10-1 Democratic majority, leading opponents to accuse her of hypocrisy.
With a history like this on such a critical topic, it’s nearly impossible to avoid the conclusion that Abigale is not her own woman. In fact, it’s equally difficult to avoid concluding that she
is being controlled from another source of “authority,” one that the people never voted for.
